2000 Awards

2000 Awards were presented at the APA-WA Chapter Fall Conference in Yakima in October, 2000. Here are some highlights of the APA/PAW Annual Awards Program for Excellence in Planning.

A panel of judges was recruited by Awards Co-chairs Lloyd Skinner (APA), lskinner@adolfson.com, and Paul Rogerson (PAW), PRogerson@co.grays-harbor.wa.us.

This year’s judges selected twelve winners for the 2000 program. Winners illustrated the strength and diversity of the planning efforts that are underway across the state. From industrial redevelopment in Mukilteo to light rail station area planning in Tacoma, from traffic calming strategies in Spokane to open space preservation in King County, these award-winning projects help showcase our profession and its best practitioners.

Winners were:

  • King County Department of Natural Resources, for the Regional Wastewater Services Plan
  • City of Mukilteo Planning Department, for its Waterfront Mixed Use Code
  • City of University Place Planning and Community Development Department, along with consultant Cascade Design Collaborative, for the city’s Town Center Plan
  • City of Tacoma and consultant LMN Architects, for the Light Rail Station Area Development Strategies
  • Kitsap County Public Works Department, Kitsap County Department of Community Development, and SCA Consulting Group, for the Bethel Road Corridor Development Plan
  • City of Issaquah, King County’s Transfer of Development Credits (TDC) Program, Port Blakely Communities, the Hooker Children’s Trust, and the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, for the Issaquah-King County TDC Project
  • Thurston Regional Planning Council, for the Regional Benchmarks for Tracking Growth project
  • City of Spokane’s Planning Services Department, for its Draft Comprehensive Plan community involvement program
  • Jefferson County, the Port Ludlow Village Council, and the Olympic Property Group, for the Port Ludlow Planning Forum

Three student projects were also recognized with awards at the program:

  • Eastern Washington University’s Spring 2000 planning studio, Under the guidance of Professor William Kelly, for the project “Taming Thor – A Review of Traffic Calming Options.”
  • University of Washington’s Spring 2000 Urban Planning Studio, under Professor Hilda Blanco, for the Cantarrana Prototype: Incrremental, Ecological Wastewater Treatment in Havana, Cuba.
  • Western Washington University’s Planning and Environmental Policy Program at Huxley, Professor Nick Zaferatos, for the Spring 2000 Planning Studio “Old Town District Redevelopment Plan.”
