Job Description:

Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an experienced professional to fill a vacant Park Design and Development Manager position. 

Primary Duties Include:

  • Develop, plan, and oversee implementation of major capital improvement programs
  • Coordinate update, renewal, and implementation of Whatcom County’s Comprehensive Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan
  • Manage recreational and natural resource planning for current and future parks, natural areas, trails, and recreational facilities
  • Prepares master plans and resource management plans for park development
  • Represent the Department in the community and manage robust and inclusive planning-related community input processes

This is a leadership position within the Department as we guide future development and expansion of our existing system of nearly 75 properties across 18,000 acres of developed and undeveloped parkland, open space, reserves, miles of shoreline and over 63 miles of trails.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, architecture, engineering, planning, or a related field AND four years of progressively responsible related experience in park planning, design and capital project management, INCLUDING two years of project management experience.  
  • Current Washington CESCL certification (Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead) required.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with GIS and AutoCAD required.

Special Requirements:

  • Must have a driving record that meets County standards and possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire and throughout employment
  • Must be eligible to cross between the United States and Canada
  • Background check that meets County criteria
  • Must obtain a First Aid/CPR certification within 6 months of employment and maintain throughout employment
