The Opportunity:

WSDOT is currently seeking two Senior Multimodal Planners (TPS4) to work on the Statewide Planning Team. We are looking for teammates who embrace challenges creatively, are energized by collaborating with others, and are ready to make a difference. Our team’s work informs agency decisions to achieve a more sustainable and integrated multimodal transportation system. These positions lead significant components of large-scale planning and policy development efforts such as the Highway System Plan, the statewide multimodal transportation plan, and special projects for the legislature and the executive team.

What to Expect:

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Senior Multimodal Planner will:

  • Serve as a lead on significant components of larger projects, such as the Highway System Plan, the statewide multimodal transportation plan, and special projects for the legislature and agency executives.
  • Serve as a specialist on multidisciplinary teams to develop statewide transportation policy to implement statewide plans and agency strategic plans.
  • Summarize complex geospatial and planning information for visual presentations to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate with WSDOT divisions and regions to integrate new policies into their business processes.
  • Apply WSDOT practices and principles to planning and conduct advanced multimodal analyses such as scenario analysis, market analysis, risk assessments, and feasibility studies.
  • Employ WSDOT’s project management process to develop scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules for planning projects.
  • Lead the development of community engagement approaches and methodologies.
  • Develop and deliver statewide public outreach activities including seeking stakeholder and public input on statewide plans and policies and sharing new policies with WSDOT staff and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in transportation, urban, regional, or land use planning, public policy, public or business administration, or other relevant field of study.

OR

  • Five (5) years of transportation planning experience that includes conducting planning studies.

AND

  • Four (4) years of professional experience involving policy development or planning, including conducting planning studies that involve researching, analyzing multiple transportation modes or interdisciplinary issues, and drafting reports (A graduate degree may substitute for one year of the required experience).

 In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software.
  • The ability to:
    1. Apply transportation planning principles and practices.
    2. Apply community engagement techniques.
    3. Manage multiple tasks and meets deadlines.
    4. Assemble divergent information into a coherent whole.
    5. Identify and understand issues, problems, and opportunities, formulate clear decision criteria, gather information, generate alternatives, and involve others in the decision-making process.
    6. Be agile, flexible, and highly adaptive in exploring numerous options that create workable solutions.
    7. Develop and use collaborative relationships to facilitate accomplishment of work goals.
    8. Consider and integrate the needs and potential contributions of others and fosters development of a common vision.
    9. Practice attentive and active listening with an underlying ability to synthesize information from various resources, incorporate present conversation content with earlier discussions, and listen to and be open to other views.
    10. Clearly convey information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Knowledge and experience applying facilitation and meeting management skills.
  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and ArcGIS Online.
  • AICP Certification.
  • Ability to speak or write a second language or ASL.
